Boxing by myself …

Boxing by myself …

There are times when I find myself training without a trainer.  Today was one of those days and I have to admit I missed Lennox who is up @ Foxwoods to work Sonya Lamonakis’ corner tonight for her 6-round heavyweight bout on the Berto-Ortiz undercard.

Still, as I approached my sweet 16 — I found myself luxuriating in the time I had to focus on stuff at my own pace and in my own sequence.

Lately, I’ve been pretty orthodox with my four-round sets — but today, I thought it would be fun to indulge in the things I like so, I did a total of 8 rounds on the double-ended bag, 4 rounds on the heavy bag, and finished up with 4 rounds on the speed bag before I did my first plus 4 on the sit-up chair.

As I write this I have to admit that my upper arms are leaden not to mention a right knee that is feeling pretty inflamed, but … and this is a big one, as an antidote to a pretty tough work week and the specter of yet another paper to write, I am that sort of wasted “noodlish-body” kind of happy that will even see me through the cart-load of laundry staring at me from across the living room.

I’ve also gotten over that momentary by-myself panic I experience in the gym sometimes when I start to feel a bit lost all on my own.

Today though, I fist-bumped my gloved hands in a boxing salute to myself for a job well done.

Great version of Dancing with Myself.

I’m glad you had a good workout. I know what you mean about the “by-myself” panic at the gym. I sometimes felt that way, especially if I was still learning my way around. I’m much more at peace when I’m walking or jogging outside with me, myself, and I.

Hey Margaret, I thought it was a great cover too, especially the video with all the clips of Anna Karena!

Also ‘hope you managed a great run today — before the rain 😉

One of the things I love most about this post is seeing a photo of you. That’s you, right? Awesome.

And I gotta say, I SUCK at the double end bag. I have never really put time into it, and every time I encounter it afresh, I feel like an idiot. Why does this bag defeat me? I feel stupid, slow, and doltish. Please divulge secrets and deliver me from idiocy.

For the past 5-6 weeks I’ve been training several times a week with a trainer. After years of relatively little one on one, I’m in heaven. Heaven! Post on Jay Fury, my trainer, forthcoming.

Yep, that is me! I don’t know why I’m so reluctant to publish pictures — mais, voila, c’est moi. (Can you tell I’m up in Montreal as I write this 😉

As for the double-ended bag, it is a challenge, but I’ve gotta say, it’s really my favorite apparatus. One can circle it, hit it hard, soft and everything in between; plus practice stuff like your hooks off the jab or right hand leads downstairs followed by a quick left. I’ve got a loooong way to go on it, but have to admit, the more I work on it, the more comfortable I feel.

BTW, hearing about the awful weather in the south — put me in mind to the fact that you live in Raleigh, NC. What I’m hoping is that you’ve managed to get through it all in tact.

Thanks for thinking of me. The tornadoes just brushed by us; enough to remind us how fortunate we are. Only one tree down for us, but 4 miles away, Shaw University is having to close for the rest of the semester. My son’s middle school is a block from Shaw and is also closed today. Lots of damage to buildings, campus, etc. I saw one house across the street from the school crushed by trees, lots of roof damage everywhere, and dozens and dozens of trees sheared away. Big old oaks; all very sad to see. Clean up is well underway.
