Susi Kentikian will be battling Carina Morena this weekend in Dusseldorf, Germany for the vacant WBA Flyweight Championship.

On the theme of professional women’s boxing … I thought I’d check out the fight cards for this coming Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 1st using the World Schedule on BoxRec.

The big female fight, of course is the WBA Female Flyweight title match between Susi Kenttikian and Carina Moreno, which, thankfully, is being televised on Germany’s SAT1, but …. please, this is pathetic.

And here’s a question. Saturday night’s Austin Trout v. Miguel Cotto fight has a total of nine bouts on the card. Given all the incredible talent among NYC professional female fighters, not to mention women fighting out of the Northeast, not one female bout could be added by any of the count them, three promoters involved in putting the fight card together (that would be Golden Boy Promotions, SMS Promotions and Promociones Miguel Cotto)???

Oh right, it’s Showtime, but even HBO Boxing has female bouts on the undercard.

What gives???

Friday Night Fights of our own – 9/2/2011

So here’s the deal.  I know I had a post yesterday noting the outstanding women’s bouts over the weekend, but over at WBAN, they’ve posted a piece by Jerry Hoffman that in its essence asks why Golden Boy Promotions is failing to put women’s bouts on their fight cards in California, not to mention televising women’s bouts on HBO, Showtime & ESPN!

It is a good question considering how popular women’s boxing is on the other side of the California border in Mexico where women’s bouts are routinely promoted and televised. Case in point, Californian Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West who has taken her WBO title and her boxing future to Mexico’s HG Boxing Promotions.  Why?  Can you guess why?  What were her opportunities going to be if she couldn’t get the promotional commitment or exposure she needed to get to the next level?

All I can say is it’s a damn shame because the talent and the desire are continuing to explode at all levels, but without support it’ll continue to disappoint even as other countries in the Americas such as Argentina, Uruguay, Panama and Mexico have become the destinations of choice when it comes to opportunities for quality fighting.

I’d love to hear what people are thinking about all of this so please add in your  ten cents worth.

BTW, here’s a video of fighter you will not get to see this weekend (read why in the WBAN article linked above), California’s 4-time women’s champion Carina “La Reina” Morena (21-3, 6-KO’s).

The YouTube video shows her boxing her heart out as she fought valiantly on January 29, 2011 in her 10-round title challenge against reigning WBA and WBO Female Light Flyweight title holder, Argentina’s own Yesica “Tuti” Bopp (16-0, 7-KO’s). And yes, the fight was heavily promoted and televised because it was held in Argentina. (The fight starts about 10:00 minutes into the video.)

For those who didn’t catch this over the weekend, the New York Times did a feature piece on boxer, Christy Martin as she readies herself for her comeback fight on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto v. Ricardo Mayorga bout to be aired on Showtime pay-per-view March 12th.  The article, written by Joyce Wadler, looks in-depth at Christy’s career and recent troubles.  The “money” quote of the piece is at the end in response to a snarky question if ever I heard one regarding Christy’s motivations for returning to the ring.   “You know,” she said, “I was a fighter before, so I’m just going back to work, and through my work maybe I can inspire other women, or give them strength to deal with situations and move forward.”   Way to go Christy!  The link to the piece is here.

Ana Julaton

Another great Philippine “Pac-Woman,” Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton has announced the “return of The Hurricane,” in her bout to be fought against Francesca “The Chosen One” Alcanter.  Of interest is the fact that the fight night will feature a mixture of Professional Boxing, Amateur kickboxing, as well as live music and comedy acts on three stages.  The event is set for February 25, 2011 at the Craneway Pavilion in Riverside, CA, and will be broadcast live in the Philippines.  For further information, check out the link here and here.

The Sweetscience.com is carrying a piece by David A. Avila, about Golden Boy Promotions’ recent efforts to support women’s boxing.  As Avila points out, “Golden Boy kept its word and female prizefighting was showcased on another fight card [this past Friday]. Working with Claudia Ollis, a new powerbroker in women’s boxing, the Los Angeles-based boxing giant Golden Boy has made waves in the boxing world. Now other boxing promotions are jumping on the bandwagon with female fighters included on their respective cards.”  This is great news for the sport and couldn’t come at a better time as we enter the countdown to next year’s debut of women’s boxing at the 2012 Olympics in London.  The article can be found here.

The new International Amateur Boxing Association’s (AIBA) is seeking to strengthen the position of women’s amateur boxing both before and after the 2012 Olympic games to include adding weight categories at future Olympic games.  As well, the association has set an agreement for the 2011 Women’s Youth and Junior World Championships to be held in Ankara, Turkey from April 28 – May 8.  For more information click here and here.
