Women’s Boxing from around the web

Women’s Boxing from around the web

Over at The Sweet Science, David A. Avila has one of his periodic pieces on the pound-for-pound best women’s in professional boxing, entitled, appropriately enough, “Avila’s New Female Fighter Pound For Pound List.”

As a the chief everything of a blog devoted to women’s boxing, I probably shouldn’t admit to the fact that I don’t feel sufficiently up on every women on the list to opine … suffice to say it was good to see the likes of Holly Holm and Mariana Juarez who just had a great on May 21st, not to mention Melinda Cooper and Ana Julaton.  If you’d like to add your opinions head on over to the site to voice them in the comments or post them here.

To punctuate why Mariana Jaurez should be considered, here’s the first part of her recent bout with Gabriela Bouvier.

Next, check out Inspiring Women’s Sports for Niamh Griffin’s piece, “Why do we box?”    The link is here and is worth heading over to listen to some inspiring audio clips from “Christina McMahon, Australia Muay Thai fighter Kelly Simon and a few boys including Irish pro-boxer Willie “Big Bang’ Casey.”

The clips are from radio interviews Niamh did some time ago and finally put together for a piece.  Really … check it out!

Finally, boxer, writer and filmmaker Jill Morley also has a blog these days called appropriately enough, Fighting It

Jill’s written a truly gut-wrenching piece that is not only worth the read, but worth the time to think about what it all means in your own life.

The piece is entitled, When Life Gives you PTSD, Turn it into Lemonblog,” and I urge you to give it a read.  The link is here.

Women’s Boxing: Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton!

Women’s Boxing:  Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton!

Ana Julaton signing Topps Trading Cards

Hey, remember Topps Trading Cards?

Well, guess who is getting one?

Give up?

The first female boxer in the history of Topps Trading Cards is being honored with a trading card of her own — and she is none other than the current Women’s WBO Super Bantamweight Champion, Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton.  I guess you could say that women’s boxing is finally coming into it’s own!

The popular Philippine-American women’s boxer has been added to the collection along with fellow Wild Card Boxing denizen and countryman Manny Pacquiao!

They will be featured in the 2011 Arthur & Ginter Framed Autographed Collector’s Item set to be randomly inserted into Topps hobby and retail trading card packs.

And in case you are unfamiliar with Ana Julaton (8-2-1, 1 KO), here’s a video of her last title defense against  #1 contender Franchesca “The Chosen One” Alcanter (18-10-1, 9 KO’s).

Sunday odds and ends

Sunday Odds and Ends

I watched the Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez vs. Sergiy Dzinziruk fight last night and came away truly impressed with Martinez’s fighting ability and the maturity he showed in the ring.  Not only had he truly trained for the bout, but his mental fortitude was also apparent as he kept to his game, never lost focus and put on the kind of boxing show that keeps fans out of their seats in concert with the fighters, all without the kind of self-aggrandizing nonsense that so often, of late, gets in the way of a good bout.  Given his peak physical condition and the kind of training regimen he keeps to, we shall likely have Martinez, 36, around for some time to come.  The fight was truly boxing at its best with a huge shout out to Dzinziruk for his considerable efforts in the fight.

Women’s boxing in Japan

The triple-header WBC title fights to have been held at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall have been put on hold due to the devastating earthquake the hit North-Eastern Japan on Friday.  Apparently all six of the boxers had just completed their official weigh-ins when the earthquake hit.  Thankfully, none of the participants were injured.  The OBPF light flyweight bout was also canceled. For more on the story in WBAN click here.

Todas Contra México – UPDATE

A Girlboxing shout out to Crystal “Baby Faced Assassin” Hoy (5-4-3 2-KO) on getting the nod to represent the Philippines in the upcoming Mexican Women’s Boxing reality TV-show:  Todas Contra México.  Crystal will join Karolina Owczarz and Keisher “Fire” McLeod-Wells on the international team as each contestant vies to win the $100,000 dollar prize. Click here for a nice feature piece on Crystal on the GMAnews.tv website.

Ana Julaton – the next bout?

Ana Julaton

Close on the heels of her successful WBO Super Bantamweight defense, The Philippines Star is reporting that Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton “is yearning for a rematch with Lisa “Bad News” Brown in the hope of avenging one of the most heartrending losses in her boxing career.”  This fight, however, will need to occur after her next bout deemed a title defense by a “mandatory challenger,” although neither Julaton nor her team are talking on what fighter that may be or where and when the fight will occur.

Julaton, a popular boxer in both her native California is considering having her next bout on Philippine soil.  Time will tell.  The link to the story is here.

Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton

Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton retained her WBO Super Bantamweight title last night in a main event extravaganza against challenger Franchesca “The Chosen One” Alcanter at the Craneway Pavilion in Riverside, California.  Broadcast live over Philippine television, the Filapina-American boxing superstar has captivated her home country at a time when Philippine boxing seems at an all time high after the “punch” delivered by Nonito Donaire in last weekend’s bout against Fernando Montiel.

With the exception perhaps of rounds 6 and 7, Julaton dominated the fight with her left jab and left-right-left combinations and managed to fend off Alcanter’s 10th round wake-up call to take the unanimous decision 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94.  Julaton improvee her record to 8-2-1, 1-KO, and as reported in the Bleacher Report may well look to stage her next title defense in the Philippines.

Women's boxing news roundup - 1/25/2011

Christy Martin, Credit: Casey Kelbaugh, NYT

For those who didn’t catch this over the weekend, the New York Times did a feature piece on boxer, Christy Martin as she readies herself for her comeback fight on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto v. Ricardo Mayorga bout to be aired on Showtime pay-per-view March 12th.  The article, written by Joyce Wadler, looks in-depth at Christy’s career and recent troubles.  The “money” quote of the piece is at the end in response to a snarky question if ever I heard one regarding Christy’s motivations for returning to the ring.   “You know,” she said, “I was a fighter before, so I’m just going back to work, and through my work maybe I can inspire other women, or give them strength to deal with situations and move forward.”   Way to go Christy!  The link to the piece is here.

Ana Julaton

Another great Philippine “Pac-Woman,” Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton has announced the “return of The Hurricane,” in her bout to be fought against Francesca “The Chosen One” Alcanter.  Of interest is the fact that the fight night will feature a mixture of Professional Boxing, Amateur kickboxing, as well as live music and comedy acts on three stages.  The event is set for February 25, 2011 at the Craneway Pavilion in Riverside, CA, and will be broadcast live in the Philippines.  For further information, check out the link here and here.

Flyweights, Ava Knight (r) & Gloria Salas

The Sweetscience.com is carrying a piece by David A. Avila, about Golden Boy Promotions’ recent efforts to support women’s boxing.  As Avila points out, “Golden Boy kept its word and female prizefighting was showcased on another fight card [this past Friday]. Working with Claudia Ollis, a new powerbroker in women’s boxing, the Los Angeles-based boxing giant Golden Boy has made waves in the boxing world. Now other boxing promotions are jumping on the bandwagon with female fighters included on their respective cards.”  This is great news for the sport and couldn’t come at a better time as we enter the countdown to next year’s debut of women’s boxing at the 2012 Olympics in London.  The article can be found here.

The new International Amateur Boxing Association’s (AIBA) is seeking to strengthen the position of women’s amateur boxing both before and after the 2012 Olympic games to include adding weight categories at future Olympic games.  As well, the association has set an agreement for the 2011 Women’s Youth and Junior World Championships to be held in Ankara, Turkey from April 28 – May 8.  For more information click here and here.
